The Water Carriers of Time

The Bhistis, or water bearers, have been vital to Kolkata's water supply for centuries, especially before piped systems were established. Originating during the Mughal period, they carried water in large leather bags called Mashqs through the city's narrow lanes. Their ability to manage heavy loads earned them deep respect from local communities. Beyond their practical role, Bhistis enriched Kolkata's culture with stories and folklore. However, modern infrastructure has diminished their role, forcing many to find alternative livelihoods. Today, efforts are underway to preserve their traditions and stories, ensuring that future generations recognize this unique cultural legacy.
